Prime minister Rumen Radev says the murder of Slavi Binev was about a redistribution of money. He told reporters after voting in the presidential election that investigators think it most likely a lot of money is involved.

Radev warned that killings like this could happen again. The oligarchy and the criminal underworld are losing control over public procurement and money flows, he said, and as resources shrink, the fight over who gets them grows fiercer.

Police solved the Binev murder in under an hour and the murder in Plovdiv in under 24 hours. Radev said that during the years of transition, high-profile murders went unsolved, and the police and the state shielded those behind them. Now the situation is completely different, "that is, the state is returning to its functions".

Dimitar Gavazov, mayor of Sungurlare, and Radoslav Revanski, mayor of Belitsa, have been arrested. The arrests are linked to public procurement. Many people connected to them have been questioned and are giving statements.

The prime minister's message to anyone who wants to settle problems by taking a life is that the state will uncover such cases even more actively. Radev expects the police, investigators, prosecutors and the court to be impartial this time.

"I am calling for more courage now, and I expect more and more people to start speaking out," he said.

The prime minister believes some political leaders are worried that more people will say what happened and how money was plundered.
