Low turnout is due to the lack of a unifying figure, a weak campaign, apathy and fear, GERB leader Boyko Borisov says. He spoke to reporters after voting in Bankya.
Borisov says voters see party candidates, not someone who can unite the nation. He said the campaign was very weak and stirred no emotion. The fear may come from voting machines and from "the repression we have watched in recent weeks, this show of force".
GERB decided not to field a candidate or back anyone. Borisov added that some candidates sought the party's support and others did not, and that was their choice.
He voted himself because, as he explained, "as the leader of a right-wing party, and this is one of the greatest values of democracy, I have a duty to do it for myself". Asked how he decided who to vote for, he replied: "Well, I know!" He did not name a candidate.
Borisov also commented on the killing of businessman Slavi Binev, head of the taekwondo federation. He said he finds it a little strange, and it worries him, that the prime minister knows of more killings to come.
Borisov says Binev was due to open a taekwondo championship with the interior minister before he was killed. The GERB leader suggested the two knew each other.
He also spoke about the case of a woman, which parliament speaker Mihaela Dotsova responded to and in which a National Protection Service officer has been arrested. Borisov says the case shows a lack of humanity.
