MP Angel Yanchev of the Revival party has called on culture minister Evtim Miloshev to resign over repairs to the Freedom Monument on Shipka Peak.

Yanchev, speaking in parliament, said the culture minister bears direct responsibility for the repairs. The money was set aside by Rumen Radev's caretaker government on 15 July this year.

He said ruling parties keep telling MPs there is no money for anything, yet handed 16 million levs to a company tied to the DPS party. That company, he said, has no capacity for such work and has done nothing but "shoddy insulation jobs on panel apartment blocks" in Veliko Tarnovo.

Three public procurement bids have fallen through since 2022, Yanchev said. Either candidates weren't approved, or, more likely, the technical project itself shows the work simply isn't needed. The project papers were signed off in 2022, in the final days of Kiril Petkov's government.

The culture ministry told MPs the museum exhibition would shrink by 35% after three professors were consulted, and said there was nothing to worry about.

Yanchev said the minister is doing nothing and sent the director of the Shipka–Buzludzha National Park Museum to explain things in his place.

He also said burying the remains of Bulgarian tsar Samuil in Sofia doesn't change the fact that "the Freedom Monument has been gutted," and accused officials of trying to rewrite Bulgarian history.

On 25 September, Revival called in a statement for work on the Freedom Monument to stop until an independent expert review is carried out.
