Democratic Bulgaria is calling for a parliamentary hearing on DANS, the interior ministry, the prison service and the head of the prison hospital over president Iliyana Yotova's pardon of Ognyan Atanasov, known as "Petrich's Escobar". Yes, Bulgaria co-chair Bozhidar Bozhanov announced the move today.
"We're asking for a hearing of the prison service, DANS, the interior ministry and the head of the prison hospital over the pardon of 'Petrich's Escobar'," Bozhanov said.
He said he has a video - filmed about a month before the pardon and released today - showing the pardoned man looking healthy and fighting four other people, apparently inside the prison hospital. Bozhanov said there are also rumours that Atanasov threatened doctors and their relatives to get certain medical reports.
Yes, Bulgaria co-chair Ivaylo Mirchev asked how sound president Yotova's judgment is when she pardons people convicted of drug trafficking. He asked whether anyone had pressured her into the decision. The pardoned man, he said, is clearly in good health. He also asked how many other pardons involved claimed health problems, and whether Atanasov had worked as an informant for the security services to earn such protection.
We Continue the Change asked why Yotova pardoned a drug dealer ten years before his sentence was due to end.
At a briefing in parliament on September 11, Democratic Bulgaria also said it wants the president and the prosecutor's office to hand over the documents used as the basis for Ognyan Atanasov's pardon.
