Deputy foreign minister Hristo Polendakov has received a copy of the credentials of Kevin Rex, Canada's new ambassador to Bulgaria, the Foreign Ministry said. Rex is based in Bucharest.
The ministry says it is a priority for Bulgaria that Canada opens an embassy in Sofia as soon as possible.
According to the ministry, Polendakov and Rex are pleased with how relations between the two countries are improving. The deputy minister said concrete steps have already been taken to build on what has been achieved and to deepen co-operation.
Polendakov said Canada is a priority partner for Bulgaria and a trusted NATO ally, and he praised work with it. He pointed to Canada's role in security in the Black Sea region and to the importance of the large Bulgarian community in Canada. The ministry says Bulgarians there promote their native culture and traditions among Canadians, contribute to the Canadian economy and strengthen ties with Bulgaria.
The two countries see big potential in high technology and artificial intelligence, thanks to Bulgaria's achievements and Canada's opportunities. Work is also turning to nuclear energy, trade and investment, and security and defence. Both sides want to step up high-level political dialogue and widen co-operation in these priority areas.
In its statement, the Foreign Ministry called exchanges in education, science and culture, and contacts between people, a "natural bridge of friendship".
Bulgaria and Canada mark 60 years of diplomatic relations this year, with ceremonial events in both countries.
At a farewell meeting in early June, Polendakov spoke with the previous ambassador, Gavin Buchan, who is also based in Bucharest. The main topic was the anniversary. Buchan's term ended in summer 2026.
