Road deaths in Bulgaria fell 28% in ten years, but only Romania has a higher death rate in the EU, a European Commission report shows. The commission presented the report today.
In 2014, 93 people per million died on Bulgaria's roads. In 2024, the figure was 74. The EU average fell from 56 to 44, so Bulgaria is still above it.
Romania had higher rates in both years: 91 per million in 2014 and 78 in 2024. Sweden and Denmark have the safest roads.
Nearly 20,000 people, 19,350 to be exact, died on EU roads in 2024. That is 3% fewer than a year earlier. More than 1.15m people were injured.
Other countries also report that road deaths since the start of this year are down by more than 5% on the same period last year.
