Sofia City Prosecutor's Office (SGP) has ordered the National Police Directorate at the Interior Ministry to check how guardrails were fitted at the 36th kilometre of the Hemus motorway, the state prosecution said. The check follows a complaint from the Road Safety Institute, and police have one month to finish it.

Claims have been made in public of discrepancies in how the barrier system was fitted and of a possible risk to road safety. Prosecutors said they need to establish the circumstances of the delivery and fitting, whether technical requirements were met, how the work was supervised and what payments were made. Documents will be requested and statements taken from representatives of the relevant institutions and companies. When the check ends, the findings will go to SGP, which will decide what action to take.

Regional development minister Ivan Shishkov has sent prosecutors many complaints over the years about breaches in road building. At a briefing in mid-July, he said the state-owned company Avtomagistrali had won three contracts to maintain motorways. The minister said it was odd that the company signed contracts with subcontractors in 2024 and soon after signed further contracts with more subcontractors.

Shishkov expects prosecutors to establish how advance payments for repairs and construction were spent.
