The cabinet has approved the annual report on road safety and on progress under the National Road Safety Strategy for 2021–2030, the government press office said.

The report was on the agenda announced earlier today for the ministers' meeting, which began at 10:00.

The background: Cabinet to review 2025 road safety report

The head of the State Agency for Road Safety wrote it under the Road Traffic Act.

Road safety remains a serious problem for society, even though some figures are improving, the document says. It describes how road safety decisions are carried out at national, regional and municipal level.

The report looks at what has been achieved, where the weak spots are and what challenges remain today. It also looks at what lies ahead.

The analysis points to problems in managing risks and gaps at different levels of protection. These call for reform and a new approach to cut road injuries. The report recommends coordinated, consistent and systematic action to reach the national targets.

Road deaths in Bulgaria fell from 93 per million people in 2014 to 74 in 2024, a drop of 28%, according to European Commission data also presented today. The EU average fell from 56 to 44, so Bulgaria remains above it.
