Prosecutors in Sofia have charged a man with holding a large stash of fake euro banknotes and forged revenue stamps, the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office said.

The offence took place in Sofia on 22 May 2023, prosecutors say. The man was found with 124 fake 200-euro notes and one fake 500-euro note, all from the European Central Bank's 2002 series. The counterfeit cash had a face value of 25,300 euros.

He also had four A4 sheets printed with forged revenue stamps marked "2 euro" and carrying the words "Posteitaliane" and "Italia".

A date for the preliminary hearing has yet to be set.

BTA also recalls another case from 24 March, when the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office charged five people with holding large amounts of counterfeit money. They were two Bulgarians, two Romanians and one Italian.
