Customs officers at the Kapitan Andreevo border crossing found 685 fake euro banknotes sewn into the lining of a jacket worn by a 19-year-old man from North Macedonia. He has been charged and detained, the District Prosecutor's Office in Haskovo said.

The man arrived at the crossing on 19 October as a passenger in a car with foreign plates. The car was travelling from Turkey to North Macedonia. Officers found the money during a thorough search. They found nothing wrong with the car itself.

The notes are 300 of €200 and 385 of €100. All were seized.

The man is charged with taking counterfeit currency across the border, an offence under the Criminal Code. The supervising prosecutor ordered him held for up to 72 hours.

A police investigator from the Border Police Directorate in Svilengrad is leading the pre-trial investigation, under the prosecutor's supervision. Prosecutors will ask the court to keep him in custody.

The day before, the press office of the Customs Agency reported another case at the same crossing. Officers checking a car entering Bulgaria from Turkey found 1,052,600 undeclared Turkish lira.
