The gold collector euro coin "St Ivan of Rila" goes into circulation today, and a queue has already formed outside the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) headquarters in Sofia. By 9:20am, more than 140 people were on an improvised waiting list, a BTA reporter said. See our original report: Bulgaria's central bank to sell €1508 gold coin «St. Ivan Rilski» from 12 October.
The coin costs €1,508 and has a face value of €100. The mintage is 3,000. It is the fifth and last BNB collector coin for 2026.
BNB sells the coin in Sofia at four counters in the main building at 1 Knyaz Alexander I Square and at four more in the Cash Centre at 10 Mihail Tenev Street.
BNB says each customer can buy one coin, whether buying in their own name or on behalf of someone else. Anyone buying for another person needs a notarised power of attorney. Someone who buys as a private individual cannot buy a second coin as a company representative, and the reverse also applies. The coin is not sold to anyone under 18.
Until the end of the working day today, the coin will also be sold by Investbank, First Investment Bank, Texim Bank, Tokuda Bank, Municipal Bank, Central Cooperative Bank and the Mint. A list of bank offices and branches is on the BNB website.
Unlike commemorative coins, collector euro coins are legal tender only in the country that issues them.
