Bulgaria's consumer protection commission (KZP) began checking all banks today to see whether they raised fees without good reason, the commission said. Under the legal deadlines, it must publish the results in the last week of October.

Inspectors will ask the banks for details of their fees and of any increases. The check covers rises from 1 January 2025 to today. If inspectors find a rise, the bank will have to give an economic reason for it.

The commission is looking at the rates and fees for the most commonly used services. These include opening and running a current account, cash withdrawals and deposits at ATMs and branches, bank transfers, and debit and credit cards. It is also checking the monthly fees for the plans banks offer their customers.

People can complain on the KZP hotline, 0700 111 22. In Sofia, the reception office is at 1 Vrabcha Street, on the ground floor, and is open from 9:00 to 17:30. Outside the capital, people can file complaints at the commission's regional offices, whose addresses are on its website.

Earlier today, the KZP said it had alerted the relevant institutions to a fraud by a company that sells products through presentations held outside shops.
