Bulgaria's labor inspectorate found more than 27,300 labor law violations during 5,800 construction site checks in the first nine months of 2026. The inspectorate said these checks covered the building sector.
About 20,000 of the violations involved health and safety at work. Another 7,190 violations related to employment contracts. Inspectors issued 2,703 fines for administrative offenses in construction.
Inspectors found over 2,600 people working without contracts in all sectors, with more than 1,080 of them in construction. To prevent serious accidents, inspectors stopped work at sites, machines, and equipment over 660 times in the construction sector alone. Total work stoppages across all sectors exceeded 770.
Total fines and settlements have reached nearly 1.7m euros. The inspectorate said it investigated 65 work accidents in the construction sector, 14 of which resulted in death.
The inspectorate will start checking labor law compliance at winter resorts from 1 November, it told BTA in early September.
