Archaeologists have begun digging at a large burial mound known as "Tumbata" near the village of Kapitan Petko Voivoda, in Topolovgrad municipality. Topolovgrad council announced this on its official Facebook page. Archaeologist Daniela Agre is leading the dig.

The mound is about 10 metres high, but almost all of its southern half has been removed. About 2 metres of the base are left to study. The team says this will show whether the site holds archaeological structures and finds of scientific value.

Work has stopped for now because of bad weather, as it depends heavily on conditions. The council is providing machinery where it can and is giving full support.

"We expect to find something interesting, both for the museum and for science," Daniela Agre said in the statement. The team also expects the study to bring new details about the history of the area.

The first dig there began in August 2024. While studying the grave of a Thracian horseman, archaeologists found a gold treasure. A year later, they uncovered a second grave, of a Thracian warrior, which also held valuable finds. All the items are on show in the vault room of the Municipal History Museum in Topolovgrad, which opened in November last year.
