Haskovo residents handed in 154 kg of hazardous household waste yesterday at a free collection event run by Haskovo council and the company EcoSafe, the council said.
Most of it, 106 kg, was washing and cleaning products containing hazardous substances. The rest was 26 kg of paints, oils, glues and resins, 17 kg of photographic chemicals and mixtures, 3 kg of expired medicines, and 2 kg of fluorescent tubes and products containing mercury.
The event lasted several hours. Staff collected the waste from people's homes so that chemicals, old medicines and pesticides do not end up in household waste bins.
The council reminded residents that hazardous substances must not go into household waste bins or down the drain, and should be handed in for safe treatment.
The council will hold such events regularly, but has not yet given any dates.
