Bulgaria's food safety agency (BABH) has blocked a shipment of table grapes from Turkey bound for the EU market. A lab test found pesticide residues above the legal limits, the agency said. The grapes will be sent back to the sender.

The shipment totals 14,100 kg of grapes, packed in 2,640 crates. The check is part of tighter controls by the agency on fresh fruit and vegetables sold in Bulgaria. BABH said it will continue the checks to keep out food that does not meet safety rules.

A month ago, in the same checks, the agency stopped five shipments of table grapes from Turkey, weighing more than 53 tonnes in total. It also stopped two shipments of peppers from North Macedonia, weighing more than 21 tonnes.

People can report suspected violations on the BABH hotline: 0700 12 299.
