A cold front is moving over the mountains, prompting the Mountain Rescue Service (MRS) and the Bulgarian Red Cross to advise hikers to exercise caution. The weather is highly dynamic, the service explained to BTA.
Temperatures in the high-altitude areas are ranging between -3 and 7 degrees. The higher parts of the Stara Planina are experiencing fog and strong winds, while other areas are currently cloudy but calm.
People should prepare for lower temperatures than those seen in recent days — we are already entering the autumn season, the MRS added. Over the past 24 hours, rescuers have not received any reports of incidents in the mountains.
According to the forecast from the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology, there will be significant cloud cover over the mountains. Rain will prevail in the Rila-Rhodope region and in the Stara Planina, with snow expected above 2200 meters. There will be strong winds, and on the highest peaks, temporary stormy northwesterly winds are anticipated. The maximum temperature at 1200 meters will be around 12 degrees, and at 2000 meters, it will be around 4 degrees.
