The number of foreign visitors to Bulgaria fell to 2,221,200 in August 2026, down 2.1% from a year earlier, preliminary data from the National Statistical Institute show.
Bulgarians took 1,116,200 trips abroad during the month, up 3.5% on August 2025. Every type of travel saw a rise.
Among foreign visitors, business trips fell 5.5% and holiday trips dropped 3.9%. Visits for other reasons rose 0.5%. People passing through Bulgaria on their way elsewhere numbered 840,600 — 37.8% of all visits.
Most visitors came from Romania, with 419,200 people. Turkey followed with 346,500, then Germany with 212,400 and Ukraine with 174,600. After them came Poland (111,600), Serbia (99,900), Greece (81,600), Czechia (73,400), the Netherlands (72,600) and France (67,900).
Bulgarians went to Greece more than anywhere else (321,600 trips), followed by Turkey (288,500), Romania (78,900), Serbia (72,400), Germany (67,300), Italy (39,700), France (29,800), Austria (29,500), North Macedonia (27,900) and Spain (24,200).
In August 2025, the institute counted 2,269,900 visits by foreigners, up 6.3% on August 2024, and 1,078,900 trips abroad by Bulgarians, up 19.4%.
