Bulgaria is drafting a new law to clean up the air and meet EU rules. Environment Minister Rositsa Karamfilova told Tatiana Sultanova-Siveva («Continue the Change») during a parliamentary session that the ministry is working to bring the EU directive into local law.
Karamfilova said she is worried the government might miss the December deadline to adopt the rules. She said she warned about these risks from her first day in office.
One new step is to create air quality roadmaps. The minister said data for these plans will be ready in the first half of 2027, and they will be finished by the end of 2028.
The ministry will include several groups when they write the new rules:
- businesses
- civil society
- non-governmental groups
- scientists.
The minister also said she is working on a new program to improve air quality. She noted that the EU rules require new air standards to be met by 2030, which means the ministry has a lot of work to do.
