Admiral Emil Eftimov has asked to leave military service, filing a report with three months' notice. The defence ministry's press office confirmed the news to BTA.
It's not yet clear what led the defence chief to make this decision.
Eftimov has led Bulgaria's defence forces since 30 March 2020. He was born on 16 August 1961.
According to the defence ministry's website, he holds all the honours and awards that come with his rank, including the ministry's "For Loyal Service Under the Colours" award and its "St George" badge of honour.
