Bulgaria's central election commission has ruled that Sergey Indzhov's registration as a vice-presidential candidate is invalid, the commission said. He ran alongside presidential candidate Alexander Trifonov Tomov on the ticket put forward by the Bulgarian Social Democracy – Eurolevitsa party for the election on October 25, 2026.
The commission says it got a letter and a records check from the civil registration department (GRAO). The documents show that the citizenship Indzhov got at birth was "Soviet". His birth certificate was drawn up in Karlovo, and a note in the file says his parents had applied for the child to get Soviet citizenship.
That's why the commission says he doesn't meet the requirements to run. Under the law, only a Bulgarian by birth who holds no other citizenship can be elected president or vice-president.
The commission's decision can be appealed to the Supreme Administrative Court, but the appeal has to go through the commission itself, within three days of the ruling being announced.
Just two days earlier, on September 22, the commission had registered the Tomov-Indzhov ticket for president and vice-president.
