Prof. Atanas Semov, a corresponding member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and a Constitutional Court judge, has announced a national anniversary campaign in Veliko Tarnovo. It will run in 2027, 2028 and 2029.
The campaign combines the marking of 190 years since the birth of Vasil Levski, 150 years since Bulgaria's Liberation and 150 years since the adoption of the Tarnovo Constitution. Semov presented it at a meeting in the Revival and Constituent Assembly museum on the link between Bulgarian history and European values, and the role of historical memory in preserving national identity.
He also showed some of his books and the film "Untold in History. Nine Sips of Freedom", about National Revival figures, heroes, national identity and the law. The film screened tells the story of the Novo Selo uprising.
The book "150 Years Since the April Uprising. 150 Heroes Tell the Story" pays tribute to those who took part in the events of 1876. Semov also spoke briefly about the three-volume work "The Constitution and the European Union", which looks at European law and the practice of the Constitutional Court.
Semov said that with this campaign and several other anniversaries, Bulgarians will not only bow to the state-builders who came before them but show that they understand the meaning of their work. He said the campaign should continue efforts to raise Bulgarian historical memory and show what it meant to create a free state based on equality and democratic principles. The Tarnovo Constitution, he explained, carries many of Levski's ideas: a state where all people live as brothers, and where Bulgarians prove they are equal to other European nations.
Before the announcement, Dr Ivan Alexandrov, deputy director of the Petko R. Slaveykov Regional Library in Veliko Tarnovo, called on Semov to bring the academic community into the marking of 200 years since the birth of Petko R. Slaveykov in 2027. Alexandrov asked for the national celebrations to be held in Veliko Tarnovo.
An initiative committee is behind the Slaveykov project. It includes the Regional Library, the Regional History Museum in the old capital, the municipalities of Veliko Tarnovo and Tryavna, and Kharmanli municipality.
