Chief inspector Lachezar Bliznakov, from the national police headquarters, says an international crackdown is starting, aimed mainly at drivers who use their phones at the wheel or skip seat belts. The crackdown is part of ROADPOL's "Focus on the Road" campaign and covers the whole of Europe.
Since the start of 2026, police have caught more than 100,000 cases of drivers and passengers not using seat belts, helmets or child seats. Drivers lose 8 points for using a phone while driving, and 10 for not wearing a seat belt.
Everyone in a car must wear a seat belt, including passengers in the back, or face a fine. The same rule applies on buses fitted with seat belts.
Now that summer is over, traffic is shifting back into towns and cities, and police checks are following it there, Bliznakov said.
