Removing members of the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Judicial Council from office would be a political body interfering in an independent one, Constitutional Court president Pavlina Panova said. She was commenting to the media on a plan announced by the ruling parties.

She said the change would mean one branch of power meddling in others. Panova said it is unacceptable and violates the independence of these bodies in carrying out their duties. There are no draft laws with such provisions yet, she added.

Justice minister Nikolay Naydenov said the word "recall" does not appear in the government's programme. He said the plan is to allow a person to be removed for serious and systematic failure to carry out their duties.

Naydenov said plans cannot be discussed before they are written as constitutional texts. "But we will respect absolutely all guarantees for the independence of each of the branches of power and the independent institutions within them," the minister said.
