Police have still not found the weapon used to kill businessman Iliyan Filipov in Plovdiv on 30 September. Interior minister Ivan Demerdzhiev said this in the corridors of parliament.
This report follows our earlier story on the Vazrazhdane party's call for Demerdzhiev to be questioned over the killing of Botev Plovdiv football club president Iliyan Filipov.
Speaking about the detained suspect, 51-year-old Slavcho Megerov, the minister said: "Other weapons have been found that we link to him, so there may well be information that concerns other crimes." Demerdzhiev said the evidence gathered is huge in volume and clearly points to the killer.
Plovdiv regional court kept Megerov in custody a few days ago. He is charged with premeditated murder.
So far the investigation has included 7 searches and seizures of premises and vehicles in Sofia and Plovdiv, more than 31 witnesses questioned and one reconstruction of the crime. The minister added that police have also found premises, and know who had access to them and who left them there.
Demerdzhiev also spoke about a scheme involving the health insurance fund. He said the code of an expensive drug was swapped for the code of a very cheap one, and the drugs were then taken out of the country. These investigations are of a different kind and will cover the whole of Bulgaria, including the National Social Security Institute.
Earlier the same day, Demerdzhiev was questioned in parliament over claims of corrupt practices in public procurement for guardrails, and of money from them being used to pay for Delyan Peevski's flights.
