Prosecutors in Haskovo have charged a 61-year-old Turkish man, named only by his initials M.T., with smuggling 57.040 kg of marijuana through the Kapitan Andreevo border crossing, the Plovdiv appellate prosecutor's office says. The drugs are worth 466,625 euros.

The man was driving a truck carrying car parts and steel goods from the Czech Republic to Turkey. During a thorough check, customs officers spotted four polypropylene bags sitting on top of the declared load. Inside were 53 plastic bags of dry plant matter. A field test came back positive for marijuana, customs officials in Svilengrad say.

Prosecutors have opened a pre-trial investigation. The prosecutor in charge has ordered the man held for up to 72 hours, and prosecutors plan to ask the court to remand him in custody.

A German woman of Turkish origin was charged and detained at the same crossing in late June. She was carrying 47.530 kg of marijuana from Bulgaria to Turkey, worth an estimated 388,827 euros.
