Today, 5 October, is World Teachers' Day, which Bulgaria marks along with more than 100 other countries. UNESCO declared the date a day for teachers in 1994. Bulgaria has marked it officially since 2006, under Council of Ministers decision No. 697 of 29 September 2006.

The date goes back to the Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which UNESCO and the International Labour Organization signed in 1966. The day honours what teachers give to society.

Figures from the education ministry, released at the start of the 2026/2027 school year, show more than 92,000 teaching staff work in Bulgaria's schools and kindergartens. More than 20,000 of them work in kindergartens. Nearly one in 5 is aged 35 or under, and the ministry's press office says the growing share of young teachers in recent years is a good sign.

On the first day of school, education minister Prof. Georgi Valchev sent greetings to teachers, head teachers, pupils and parents. Speaking of the work teachers do, he said: "To hold a child's attention, to motivate them, to be demanding without putting them off, and to find a way to reach them even when that seems hard."
