The EU will stop all imports of Russian gas by the end of 2027, European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen told the European Parliament.

"Four years ago, Russia tried to blackmail us. Back then, 45% of our gas imports came from Russia," she said.

"Almost overnight, most of those imports stopped, but Europe stayed united and came out stronger," von der Leyen added.

"Today, Russia's share of our gas imports has dropped from 45% to 12%. By the end of next year, we will cut it to zero," she said.

She said the EU has found other sources of gas and sped up spending on clean energy.

At the start of 2026, the EU adopted rules to phase out Russian gas imports step by step.

Under the plan, imports of liquefied natural gas from Russia must stop completely by the end of 2026, while pipeline gas deliveries must end no later than November 30, 2027.
