Food inspectors in Haskovo have found nearly 500 kg of meat and animal parts at a private property in Simeonovgrad being used to slaughter animals illegally, the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency said.

The yard was not registered as a farm, a smallholding or a place for making or selling food. When inspectors turned up, the cold store was running and a separate room had been set up for cutting meat.

None of the meat in the cold store had papers showing where it came from, and none of it carried the required health or ID marks. There was also no record of the animals' identification or movements.

Nearby, inspectors found a trailer loaded with hides, heads and bones left over from the slaughter and cutting. They seized everything; it will be destroyed at a rendering plant, and the property's owner will be issued citations for administrative offenses.

From 11 to 17 September 2026, inspectors ran more than 2,200 checks across Bulgaria. They shut down three sites over various breaches and destroyed more than 750 kg of food of animal origin.
