Drug trafficking routes, gun parts, fake goods and hidden migrants turned up in a week-long international operation called "Balkan Bridge II", which wrapped up today. Anton Zlatnov, head of the border police directorate, and Stefan Bakalov, deputy head of the customs agency, gave the results at a briefing at the Kapitan Andreevo border crossing.
Checks ran for a week at every border crossing in Bulgaria. Officers found seven people from outside the EU hidden away.
Among the goods seized were more than 58 kg of drugs, 58,680 e-cigarette liquids and more than 300,000 cigarettes with no tax stamp. Officers also seized over 22,300 fake textile items, 1,750 packs of medicine and 9,000 perfumes, toiletries and cosmetics.
They also found more than 1,130 gun parts and rounds of ammunition, plus two inflatable boats meant to carry migrants across the Channel from France to the UK. Other banned goods turned up too.
Bulgaria's border police and customs agency took part, along with the UK's National Crime Agency, German customs, and officers from the US, France, Austria and Italy. Japan, Greece and Romania joined as observers.
