Bulgaria's food safety agency (BFSA) has carried out 2,513 checks across the country at places that serve food to children and pupils. Between 14 September and 14 October 2026, inspectors visited children's facilities, school canteens, school buffets, food businesses covered by the Food Act and catering firms that deliver meals to kindergartens and schools. The checks were on top of regular official inspections.

Inspectors closed a school canteen in Pazardzhik and a snack workshop in Haskovo because of poor hygiene.

They drew up 18 reports of administrative violations, saying the food on offer did not meet the rules for children's and school meals. They also pulled 298 kg of food of animal and non-animal origin from sale.

Inspectors also found wrong markings and labels on some foods, and storage time limits that were not kept. Some sites had hygiene problems and gaps in their food safety paperwork. In some of them, there was no proof that surfaces touching food were cleaned and disinfected.

The agency issued 152 orders to fix faults in buildings and technical equipment.

The agency says it will keep checking how the rules on feeding children are followed and will impose penalties within its powers. People can report problems on the hotline 0700 122 99 or through the online contact form on the BFSA website.

BTA recalled that it became known today that the BFSA, the Consumer Protection Commission and the National Revenue Agency will start joint checks in the warehouses of large retail chains across the country.
