Police in Shumen have warned of a new kind of bank fraud. The press office of the regional police directorate said scammers are emailing firms and organisations and urging them to pay what they owe under existing contracts into a new bank account named in the email.
Police asked firms, public bodies and organisations to be especially careful with payments to newly given accounts. Members of the public should also not send money to such accounts until they have confirmed the accounts are genuine.
The press office said any change of bank account or payment details must be checked with the other party before payment. An email telling you to pay elsewhere is not enough reason to send money. The same goes for a letter or a phone call.
The account should be checked through official channels, with an authorised representative of the body or organisation concerned. If fraud is suspected, the heads of the affected body or organisation should be told.
