The government has allocated additional funds to the Interior Ministry's 2026 budget, the government press office announced. The largest sum — €63,486,235 — is earmarked for activities related to implementing the model for a Centralized System for the Personalization of Bulgarian Identity Documents.
Separately, the cabinet approved €4,500,000 for the urgent repair of the barrier-type engineering structure along the Bulgarian-Turkish border and the access road leading to it.
A third sum — €3,056,470 — is designated for the issuance of Bulgarian identity documents. The Interior Ministry will use these funds to pay off already signed contracts.
The project for the new identity document system was launched at the end of April this year. At that time, the caretaker cabinet allocated €10,392,945 for building the model of the Centralized Personalization System. Those funds were intended for the development and rollout of the system, which is meant to speed up document issuance.
On April 22, 2026, the caretaker government also made another decision regarding identity documents — it updated the fees for them and introduced new types of documents.
