Around 19,200 ID documents in the Haskovo region will expire by 31 December, the regional police directorate says.

Most are passports — 12,600 of them — followed by 3,600 driving licences and about 3,000 ID cards.

From 1 October, the police station in Stambolovo will stop taking applications for ID documents. In September, officers from the "Bulgarian identity documents" unit went there every Thursday to collect applications and hand out finished documents. The directorate says it is dropping the outreach service because fewer people were using it.

Finished documents will now be handed out at the passport office in Haskovo instead. People who paid for express ID cards or passports can only pick them up in Sofia, at the service centre of the "Bulgarian identity documents" directorate.

Since the start of the year, the Haskovo regional directorate has taken in about 32,500 applications. In July, about 34,000 ID cards, 19,800 passports and nearly 7,500 driving licences were due for renewal — around 42,100 more documents than now.
