Bulgarians made 5,427,162 trips for personal and business reasons in 2025, Eurostat says. That is 2.1% more than in 2024. Across the EU, trips rose by 1.4%, or 17m.
Some 72.6% of Bulgarians' trips were within Bulgaria and 27.4%, almost a third, were abroad. Trips abroad totalled 1,489,122, up 9.1% on 2024. Of these, 66.6%, or 991,532, were to another EU country.
EU residents made more than 1.20bn personal and business trips, including holidays. About 70% were in their own country, and almost 264m, or 22%, were to other EU countries. In all, 92% of Europeans' trips stayed in the EU. Some 8% of trips abroad went outside the bloc, and fewer than half of those were to countries outside Europe.
Romania (89%) and Spain (87%) have the highest share of domestic trips. Greece, France and Portugal each have 85%. The lowest shares are in Luxembourg (5%), Belgium (29%) and Malta (32%).
Europeans travel more often in their own country but spend more abroad: €379.4bn, against €266.2bn on domestic trips.
On domestic trips, 34% of spending, or €90.3bn, goes on accommodation and 21%, or €56.0bn, on transport. Together they make up more than half of all spending. On trips abroad, accommodation takes 35%, or €131.3bn, and transport 32%, or €121.5bn.
