Bulgaria's Food Safety Agency (BABH) is launching snap checks on potatoes at five of the country's biggest retail chains and their warehouses, the agency says. The checks run from October 6 to October 12, 2026.
Inspectors will look at where the potatoes come from, their batch numbers, labelling and paperwork. They will also check whether the potatoes meet quality rules and market standards.
The main focus is tracing the potatoes, BABH says — checking whether their stated origin gets switched or faked as they move through the retail chain. If inspectors find any breaches, the agency will take action under current law.
BTA notes that food inspectors at Bulgaria's regional food safety offices ran 2,273 checks on production, trade and catering businesses between September 11 and 17, 2026.
