Bulgaria is using drones to watch its Black Sea coast more closely, the Defence Ministry press office said. It called the move a precaution to improve security.
The Bulgarian army uses drones to monitor the coastline and the air and sea space off it. The ministry says it wants to get timely information on the situation in the area.
The drones are part of extra security steps, the ministry explained. Flights that people have noticed along the coast may therefore be linked to the stepped-up monitoring.
Defence minister Dimitar Stoyanov spoke separately to the defence ministers of Turkey and Romania last week. Both talks were about security in the Black Sea region, and both took place after incidents in which two merchant ships were hit.
