Bozhanov: Signs point to Russian military units behind attacks on ships in Black Sea

08.10.2026

Bozhidar Bozhanov said indirect signs point to Russian military units behind the drones. Democratic Bulgaria proposed including a note to Russia in the declaration of the Consultative Council on National Security (KSNS), but the proposal did not win support.

Bozhidar Bozhanov, co-chair of Yes, Bulgaria and deputy head of the Democratic Bulgaria group in parliament, told reporters in parliament that all the indirect evidence shows Russian military units hit the ships in the Black Sea with drones.

Bozhanov said Democratic Bulgaria put two proposals to the Consultative Council on National Security (CCNS) for its declaration on the case, but neither won support. One called for a note asking Russia to stop all aggressive acts at once in Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea. The other called for the declaration to back the position of 51 countries, including the EU, that Russia should stop firing immediately and move to peace talks.

Bozhanov claimed that Iliana Yotova and Rumen Radev refuse to name Russia, most likely because that is Lavrov's position, and expect Peskov to praise them again. "This is a 'bowed-head position'. It is irresponsible and does not help Bulgaria's national interest or its security," he said.

Atanas Atanasov, a Democratic Bulgaria MP and deputy speaker of parliament, also commented on the case. He said the ship that sank took 15 days to sail from Egypt to Ukraine, when the normal time is 5. Atanasov said this is odd, and it must be established whether the ship stopped anywhere and what cargo it carried.

He said the ruling duo of Radev and Yotova fear upsetting Russia during the election campaign and letting down the pro-Russian voters of Progressive Bulgaria.

Atanasov also said the prime minister reacted "rather nervously" yesterday when he said "Ask Zelensky". The MP said Ukraine has already given Bulgarian institutions the information it has on the drones, and the prime minister does not know this. Zelensky said Ukrainian and Bulgarian authorities are in contact and that the information has been handed over.
