A court in Haskovo has ordered a 58-year-old Bosnian man to be held in custody over cocaine smuggling at the Kapitan Andreevo border crossing, the court said. He is a truck driver.
He was detained on 7 October as he tried to take 12.630 kg of cocaine from Bulgaria into Turkey. A search of the tractor unit's cab found 12 packs of white powder that tested positive for cocaine.
Prosecutors say the drugs were seized after a joint operation by the Chief Directorate for Combating Organised Crime and the Customs Agency.
The court said there is a real risk the accused would flee to avoid possible future punishment. It said the amount of drugs is relatively large and the smuggling was planned in advance, with people in Turkey also involved.
The ruling can be appealed to the Court of Appeal in Plovdiv.
