The Regional Historical Museum – Burgas is organizing an open house day at the Rusokastro archaeological site, allowing visitors to explore the fortress free of charge. The event marks the upcoming September 22 – Bulgaria's Independence Day, as well as the 20th anniversary of the start of archaeological excavations in the area.
Rusokastro is the site of the greatest victory of the Bulgarian military during the 14th century, achieved on July 18, 1332. On that day, the Bulgarian army, led personally by Tsar Ivan Alexander, defeated the Byzantine forces commanded by Emperor Andronikos III Palaiologos. Following the siege, the Byzantines were forced to surrender, and the triumph led to the final recognition of Southern Thrace as Bulgarian territory.
As part of the event, specialized lectures dedicated to the history of the medieval city and the results of recent research will be held at 10:00 and 11:00. Information will be provided directly by the archaeologists currently conducting excavations at the fortress. The museum extends a special invitation to all teachers, students, and parents from the Burgas region to visit this historical site and learn about the past of the Burgas area.
