Ryanair will fly direct between Plovdiv and Malta next summer, Plovdiv municipality said. Tickets go on sale today on the airline's booking system.
Planes will take off twice a week, on Monday and Friday. The municipality says this schedule is among the most popular in European aviation.
It says these days let people from Plovdiv and the whole South Central region choose between a long weekend from Friday to Monday, a short trip, or a break of 7 or 10 days.
The Plovdiv Airport Development Fund, of which the municipality is a member, led the talks on the route. It works to improve the region's air links and draws big European airlines with market-based incentives.
Plovdiv mayor and fund chair Kostadin Dimitrov said: "The launch of a direct route to Malta is an important step in our efforts to turn Plovdiv airport into an active year-round gateway for southern Bulgaria."
