Anyone who notices even one sign of a stroke should get medical help at once, the Health Ministry said today, marking World Stroke Day.

The most common signs are sudden weakness or numbness in an arm, especially on one side of the body, a twisted or drooping face on one side, and sudden trouble speaking or understanding speech.

A stroke can strike without warning, so spotting the first signs is vital, the ministry said. It said a quick response can limit serious damage and affect treatment, recovery and the patient's quality of life. The ministry said the day is a chance to draw attention to prevention, early recognition of symptoms and timely medical care.

This year's nationwide campaign has the slogan "Every minute is precious". The Stroke and Aphasia Association and the Bulgarian Stroke Society are behind it. They want more people to know what a stroke is and what to do if they suspect one.

Bulgarian municipalities back the campaign, and information materials will reach the public.

Bulgaria recorded 26,758 stroke cases from January to July 2026, or one every 11 minutes, according to data from the National Health Insurance Fund.
