Bulgaria's postal market is worth €500m and has 87 operators, the Ministry of Transport and Communications said on World Post Day.
The day is marked today under the motto "One postal network, endless possibilities". In a greeting to postal workers, minister Georgi Peev said post services now cover more than letters and stamps. They include courier deliveries, e-commerce and parcel tracking. "This changes the work. It changes the sector itself," he added.
Peev spoke about the work of counter staff, sorting centre workers, drivers, couriers and dispatchers, who make sure parcels reach their recipients. He said the day is a time to talk about how the sector is developing and to thank postal workers. "Behind these figures there is not just a market and statistics. There are people," he wrote in the statement.
The ministry also set out tasks for the operators. It said Bulgarian Posts must combine modernisation with care for the people and towns that rely on the postal network. Private operators and courier firms should keep investing in technology, organisation and working conditions. The state wants the changes to bring better services, a better working environment and access to postal services across the country, the ministry said.
Peev announced an audit of Bulgarian Posts earlier this month, during a short question session at a meeting of the parliamentary committee that oversees his ministry. He said the audit found weaknesses in management: no real activity beyond spending the subsidy, use of outside services, and consultancy contracts with an unclear purpose. He said the company also pays for services it should do itself, such as legal and consultancy services for public procurement.
