Lukoil Neftohim Burgas says there is no reason to fear a diesel shortage in Bulgaria while the refinery is running and meeting domestic demand, according to a statement the company sent to BTA.

The refinery makes between 240,000 and 260,000 tonnes of diesel a month. Bulgaria uses up to 190,000 tonnes. The surplus is exported.

The statement follows news of a deal between US President Donald Trump and Russia's Vladimir Putin on diesel exports. President Iliana Iotova and several politicians have offered their own views on it and said what they expect.

The refinery says an export ban would not put more fuel on the Bulgarian market. It would cut output and hurt the plant's efficiency. The company also argues that banning exports of high-value products such as diesel and jet fuel deliberately lowers Bulgaria's GDP and leads to the internationalisation of the Bulgarian economy. It says this slows growth, costs society potential gains and directly affects the well-being of Bulgarian citizens.
