Bulgaria's budget deficit for 2027 should drop from the planned 3.8% of GDP to as close to 3% as possible, deputy prime minister and finance minister Galab Donev told BNT. One option on the table is for the 2027 budget to run a deficit of exactly 3%.
"Our goal is to bring that 3.8% deficit down as close as we can to the 3% limit," Donev said on the show "Denyat Zapochva s Georgi Lyubenov".
This should let Bulgaria close its excessive-deficit procedure, which Donev says is a heavy burden on the country. He said the European Commission could also force Bulgaria to cut spending and keep the budget close to a 3% deficit, which is why the finance ministry wants to hit that mark.
The ministry is looking for new revenue and ways to cut spending. Donev said the goal is for the extra revenue to keep coming in, not just appear once.
The 2027 budget also has to fit within the finance ministry's three-year forecast.
