Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the fourth most common cause of symptomatic narcolepsy, stated Prof. Ivan Staikov, head of the Clinic of Neurology and Sleep Medicine at Tokuda Hospital, during the Second National Forum for People with Multiple Sclerosis. The event was organized by the Bulgarian Society of Neurology and the "MS – Together to the Top" Foundation, with the participation of patients, their relatives, and experts in diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation.

According to Prof. Staikov's data, approximately 9,000 people in Bulgaria suffer from this chronic autoimmune disease, which primarily affects young people, with about 300 new cases registered every year. During the forum, the following will be presented:

One of the doctor's main focuses is sleep disorders, which occur more frequently in MS patients than in the general population. Among these, sleep apnea stands out—a condition where airflow is reduced or interrupted for more than 10 seconds. It is diagnosed in MS patients 20% more often than in healthy individuals and contributes to fatigue, which is one of the most common symptoms of the disease. Prof. Staikov warns that sleep apnea is responsible for more than 20% of car accidents resulting from falling asleep at the wheel.

Another serious obstacle is restless legs syndrome, characterized by an irresistible urge to move the limbs. This is caused by a decrease in iron levels and leads to severe mood and sleep disturbances. Quality of rest issues often include difficulty falling asleep, which causes daytime sleepiness, malaise, fatigue, and impaired concentration. It is important to note that 20%-30% of patients suffering from insomnia also experience anxiety or depression.

This information is important for the residents of Burgas and the region who care about their own health or the health of their loved ones.

To manage this condition, Prof. Staikov recommends that patients maintain realistic expectations regarding their sleep and implement stimulus control therapy. This includes adhering to a regular wake-up and sleep schedule, limiting daytime naps, and using relaxation techniques. Additionally, moderate physical activity throughout the day is recommended for those affected by MS.
