EU farm and fisheries ministers meet in Brussels today for a two-day Council meeting, with Bulgaria's farming minister Plamen Abrovski taking part, the ministry said.
Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Romania and Croatia are jointly asking the EU to fully review its rules on compensation in quarantine zones, after an outbreak of sheep and goat pox.
Abrovski laid out this position to parliament's farming, food and forestry committee last week. He says the EU's rules in this area are badly out of date, and farmers now forced to keep animals inside quarantine zones around outbreaks get no compensation at all.
On the first day, ministers will discuss the Common Agricultural Policy for the years after 2027. They'll also look at farm markets, including the impact of the war in Ukraine.
Tomorrow the Council turns to fishing. Ministers will look at a draft regulation on EU support for 2028-2034, covering the Common Fisheries Policy, the European Ocean Pact, maritime policy and aquaculture policy.
