Caring for children, grandchildren or other relatives causes no problems at work for 79.3% of employed Bulgarians who do it, figures from the National Statistical Institute (NSI) show.

The data come from the survey "Reconciliation between work and family life", part of the 2025 Labour Force Survey. The European Commission co-funded the survey, and the NSI has posted the results on its website. People aged 18 to 74 took part.

In all, 913,500 people, or 19.7% of those surveyed, look after children under 15, their own or their partner's. Of these, 772,000 (84.5%) have jobs.

Some 57.4% of people who look after children use childcare services such as nurseries, kindergartens, after-school clubs and professional childminders. Among those who do not use services for one or all of their children, 48.9% do the caring alone or with their husband or wife.

Another 463,000 people regularly care for relatives aged 15 and over who are frail, ill or have disabilities. Of these, 61.9% have jobs.
